a new word….

Posted on: August 2, 2010

I have learnt a new word! I do quite like learning new words; but rarely come across them. Perhaps I need to read slightly more intellectual books?

Today’s new word; concupiscene.  I read it in Secrets, by Freya North, which is an enormously enjoyable book although not in any sense intellectual.  I’m reading that to recover from reading 1000 Splendid Suns by Khalid Hosseini, which was better than I expected, and enormously depressing. Concupiscene is used in Secrets to mean lusty, I think, which strikes me as a waste as lusty is in itself a glorious word.  However, in the context of the book the selfish element of the word is relevant.

And I am trying to use it in a sentence. Does ‘I learnt the word concupiscence today’ count?

No. Two out of ten. Must try harder.
